The Leica lens on the Lumix LX3 is really pretty impressive - especially for close-ups. Being such a small sensor, the depth of field is significantly higher than it would be for an SLR at the same aperture. The resolving power is excellent too, as can be seen in the 100% crop from the dandelion picture.
Hi Ian
ReplyDeleteLX3 is tempting, but so is the G10. Both sync up to past 1/4000s (or was it an 1/8000), which is nice when compared to an SLR.
Anyway, I think I wait a bit until this may becomes reality: http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/15/olympus-micro-four-thirds-throwback-set-to-launch-early-july/camera meets m4/3 standard, so with a fast lens you may get shallow depth of field - which may be one of the biggest attractions for me in such a compact camera. The m4/3 I think will play a big role in the next years to come, filling the gap between compacts and SLRs.
Anyway, have a nice weekend, best regards,
Markus
PS: Congrats to your 2nd (!!!) in the POV!
It took me ages to decide on a compact. I couldn't make my mind up whether I wanted a replacement for an SLR, or something which was complementary. The LX3 gives me total portability (it's quite a lot smaller than the G10) and a Leica wide-angle lens. The downside is the poor reach at the long end (60mm equivalent in 35mm), but it's not possible to have everything!
ReplyDeleteThe m4/3 standard does look very interesting indeed. I have a friend who bought a Panasonic G1 and absolutely loves it. The Olympus looks fun too, and is certainly very "retro" in its concept. Good luck in making your choice!
As for the 2nd place in POV, I don't mind admitting that Ann had me sweating right until the very end. Good old David Hunt, that's what I say!!
